Dissolved Oxygen(DO) Meter
What is Dissolved Oxygen Meter?
Dissolved oxygen meters are analytical instruments used to measure the amount of oxygen dissolved in a unit volume of water. Oxygen dissolves poorly and can only exist in water at low concentrations however it is still is essential for the respiration of a wide variety aquatic animals and bacteria. The accurate measurement of dissolved oxygen is critical to processes such as the making of compost tea, testing water quality, sewage treatment, river monitoring, fish farming, wine making many other applications where the amount of dissolved oxygen in water is important.
Types of Dissolved Oxygen Meter
There are many types of Dissolved Oxygen Meter, and you can choose the right type of Dissolved Oxygen Meter based on your application scenario and usage requirements. Common types of Dissolved Oxygen Meter include portable and benchtop types Dissolved Oxygen Meters.
Features of Dissolved Oxygen Meter

- Metallurgy
Why measure dissolved oxygen?
In aquaculture, if the dissolved oxygen concentration is too low, fish can suffocate. In wastewater treatment plants, bacteria break down solids. If the dissolved oxygen level is too low, the bacteria will die and the decomposition will stop. On the other hand, if the dissolved oxygen level is too high, energy will be wasted by aerating the water. In industrial applications such as boilers, low dissolved oxygen levels are required in the make-up water to prevent corrosion and the development of boiler scale. Boiler fouling inhibits heat transfer, so monitoring dissolved oxygen levels is crucial to ensure process efficiency. High dissolved oxygen levels in water make drinking water taste better. However, high dissolved oxygen levels can increase corrosion in water pipes and distribution pipes.
How to Measure Dissolved Oxygen
There are three methods for measuring dissolved oxygen concentration: the latest technology uses electrochemical or optical sensors.
- Dissolved oxygen sensors are connected to instruments for field sampling and laboratory applications, or to data loggers, process monitors and transmitters for deployed measurements and process control.
- Colorimetry can provide a basic approximation of the dissolved oxygen concentration in a sample. There are two methods designed for high and low dissolved oxygen concentration ranges. These methods are fast and inexpensive for basic projects, but they are limited in range and prone to errors due to the presence of other redox agents in the water.
- The traditional method is Winkler titration. This method has long been considered the most accurate and precise, but it is prone to human error and is more difficult to perform than other methods.
